Danny Challoner

Hello there.

My name is Rachel Challoner and I'm looking for anyone that remembers my father, Danny Challoner, from RAF Bridgnorth (or elsewhere). My father died 5 years ago, and it's only now that I realise what little I know about his life.

I don't have much information about his time in the RAF, but I do have a group photo, taken at RAF Bridgnorth, presumably during Basic Training. It is labelled 'November 1958' and is of Hut 219, 25 Flt. There are some names signed on the back - those that I can make out are Cpl Eden, Stevenson (Chesterfield), Wood (Nottingham), Smith (Motherwell), Whitwell (Sittingbourne), Tosh (?), Todd, Stevenson (Ayrshire), Rump,& Taylor (Rosyth).

If anyone knew my father, or has any recollections of him, I would dearly love to hear from you and would be very grateful for your memories - good or bad!

With very many thanks in advance for your help,
Rachel Challoner

Re: Danny Challoner

Hi Rachel.
sorry to hear about your dad.
Have you got his RAF Number etc?
If so, suggets that you write to HQ Air Command
ACOS (Manning) 22E1b1
RAF Innsworth Gloucestershire GL3 1EZ
Give them his RAF Number,RAF Trade (if known. What years he was in the RAF and any other info you have that might help.
You may have to produce copies of his birth and death certificates.
Ask for his SERVICE Records. On receipt of them.you will have further aavenues for your enquiries.

Good Luck

Re: Danny Challoner

Hi again Rachel
Have you tried TV Channel 4 text page 172 ?
You can ask for info about your dad.
Have a look at the page and you will see how to send in your request. Totally free.

Re: Danny Challoner

Hello Ken

Thank you so much for replying and for your suggestions.

I have actually got the paperwork all ready to send off to request dad's service records, but am stumped for the time being as I can find no trace of his RAF number. I have written to my uncle, asking if he may know it, and am just waiting to hear back!

The Channel 4 Text page seems like an excellent idea - I'm going to check it out as soon as I've posted this!

Once again, very many thanks for your help.
Best Wishes
Rachel

Re: Danny Challoner

Hi Rachel.
this might be a long shot but worth looking at.
Were you or any siblings born whilst your dad was in the RAF?
If so, you may have his service number on the Birth Certificate. My daughters were born whilst I was in the RAF and their certs have my service number and rank under the heading"Occupation"
Have you or relatives got old address books? They might have his service number.
Do you know exactly when and where he joined up? You mention 1958 so that should limit the choices.Do you know what trade he was in the RAF? This will narrow the search.
Failing that, worth writing a seperate letter to :-
RAF Personell Management Agency, PMA IM 1a.
Room 5 Building 248
RAF Innsworth.Gloucestershire. GL3 1EZ
Phone Number 014452 712612 EXT 8177
Under Data Prorectiuon Act you will need to complete
a Subject Action Request (SAR) MOD Form 1694 which if you havent got, Innsworth will provide.
Keep searching and good luck.

Re: Danny Challoner

Hello again Ken

SINCERE thanks for all your help in my search. I've now got the last 3 of my father's RAF number (my uncle suggested looking under the leather band of dad's RAF hat - result!) and so at least with this I can now send off for copies of his service records.

The other info I've found out is that he was in the RAF from approx. 1957/58-1963, was a Junior Radar Technician, and I believe he served at RAF Scampton and RAF Cottesmore, where his CO was 'Johnnie' Johnson.

Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I really do appreciate your help, and thank you for helping me get this far!

Very best wishes,
Rachel

Re: Danny Challoner

Hi Rachel
You say that you got yor dads' "last 3" from inside his hatband. well Done Sherlock Holmes!
Was this the only bit of his kit that you have? Reason being that Service Numbers were stamped or marked on most items but things like shirts, shoes etc would have been discarded on demob. I still have my original brushes (Brass,Shoe(2) and clothes. Each shows my service number. If he retained his kitbag or holdall, this would also have a full number.

He most likely would have done his radar training at RAF Locking.

Let me know how you get on with RAF Records office and details of his career/

All the best

Ken.

Re: Danny Challoner

Hi Ken

Just to let you know that I have now received copies of my father's RAF Service Record. There's not a lot of info - only 2 photocopied pages - but at least now I have a list of the places he served, along with dates.

Thanks for all your help along the way, I am most grateful.

Best wishes,
Rachel

If so, he may have been entitled to campaign medals.
