Re: Modem & MP3 in Ubunto Linux

Hi Moh,

Thanks for your e-mail! Linux has a difficult time with dial-up modems (especially if they are Winmodems). This is because Winmodems are not true modems in a real semse, because they use software to emulate what real modems do.

I suggest that you have your son post his computer specifications on this forum:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

and ask the Ubuntu community. I have heard nothing but good things about Ubuntu and its great hardware detection.

You might want to have your son check the sound utility to make sure that simple things (like the mute button is unchecked) are ok... and that his sound card is detected in his hardware manager.

Your son should also be able to download good MP3 players as well as codecs once he gets on line from the Ubuntu repositories......

Re: Modem & MP3 in Ubunto Linux

Hi Moh,

Glad the sound problem is solved. Like some other Linux distros, copyrights stop some software from being included in Linux. That being said, there are repositories for Ubuntu that will allow you to download the appropriate software to run MP3s and other media files. You cna Google it, or look at the Ubutu forums for more advice on which repositories to use.
