Crawdads and snakes
When I was a kid, there were a lot of crawdads around. When there would be a warm rain in the spring. There would be crawdad holes with mud kicked up around the opening. Lots of them. Well, not lots, but many. One of the reasons for playing football was the showers. While in grade school, and when we lived on Trails End, I would run a tub of water in the back yard and by the time I got home and darkness came, the water would be warm. Obviously, this is the fall, September, October time frame. One day, I go dashing across the yard and hop in the tub (oh, yeah a no 3). As I stepped into the tub with my trailing foot, a shape moved quickly into the suronding weeds, the shape of a snake. I stood in the tub, more than a little afraid to sit down, splashing water. Finally, I jumped out of the tub, clearing the weeds and running into the house. Like all snakes, seen in my youth, this was a large snake, probably a cross between an Anaconda and a Cottonmouth. Big, mean, poisonous. |

Didja ever drop carbide down those crawdad holes??? If there was water in them, and a crawdad, he'd come out pretty quick when that carbide started bubbeling! I had forgotten about that pastime! fredas |

Once we put some carbide in an empty pint, plugged it with a cork with a hole and tossed it in the Perry dairy pond. We anticipated an explosion. Finally we went back to fishing. Then about two hours later, after it had blown to the other bank, the gas started escaping from the hole. Never did blow up. Just smoked a lot. |
