Summers and at least one bible school
I just remembered that one summer, must have been about '50, I went to a two week bible school at the church on 2nd street. There was the sermon, and a bit of bible story but then we got to the crux of the matter (at least for a 10 year old) - shop. I got to cut out a teapot shape from a piece of plywood, add a couple of hooks, decals and some varnish and viola..a holder for pot holders. Anyone else recall this? ed |

Ed, You sure brought back some good memories about Summer Bible School. I remember going to Baptist Church for bible school. Fred Von Moss was our teacher. He did a lot for all us boys who had nothing to do in summer. We all enjoyed it, especially getting to go to Grand Lake and camp out and fish with our class. And when the Baptist church School was over we all went to the First Christian Church bible school. Thanks for the memories, Tom |

I went there one summer, also, and it must have been about 48 or so because later the Methodist Church had Bible School. I remember that I met Janie Smothermon and I liked her very much. I went to Mineral Heights and she went to Whitebird and we wouldn't have met until Jr. High otherwise. Later, I think it was the summer of 50,just before we went into Jr. High, Helen Carnes taught our Bible School class at the Methodist Church. We got to meet Larry and Dixie Graham and Dixie Skaggs. I still have a picture of the class, with Larry's picture cut out to put in my locket. It was a very big class, partly because Helen's nieces were in it, and partly because everyone liked Helen so much. |

Fredas has a lot of Whitebird photos on the site. 48 would have been about the time the Star opened and I was at Central/Twin Schools. Your friend is likely on the site in the school photos. Peace |

If he is, and he's identified, the search engine will pick him up. I just posted the 1918 directories for Cardin, Century, and Hockerville. (5/14/2008) They should be picked up by the search engine this afternoon. There's some real surprises in them. Stores, theatres, etc. |
