Tormados in area?
I just got off the phone with Mike and Lisa who live in Wichita and they were saying some twisters were on the ground. I went to the national weather service but they are always looking ahead. Not at what just happened. Any news? Thanks Ed |

Ed, How are things in Picher after the tornado went thru? I am in Kansas City hearing all manner of reports of fatalities, major 'war zone' destruction. Please let me know as you can. Mary Ann [Koontz] Thornton |

Picher has been devastated. Tornado hit around 530 in evening. Watched T.V. reports from Pittsburgh and Joplin during the nite. As of this morning there are 8 confirmed dead and are still going thru the debris looking for survivors. I was told there is nothing left from the south end of town. All the government homes that were built are gone. Something like a 20 block area was completely wiped out. Quawpaw was also hit. Fred Von Moss home was hit. They are ok but had a lot of damage. I talked to Brenda oe of their Daughters. Picher is closed. You cannot get in unless you can prove residency.Pray for our former friends and relatives, Tom |

Thank you so much for getting this on the website so quickly. For the people (myself) that no longer live in the area, we depend on our friends that live in the area. I will always love my hometown of Picher and will pray for the people who have lost everything due to this tornado. Please post anything that we can do from here to help. Thanks again for quickly letting us know. Tom thank you for the e-mail letting me know. |

From Norma (Wilder) Huffman: 3. 5/11/2008 8:08:11 AM, Jamie Rhodes-Hardison, Foyil,Ok To the city of Picher, I am in shock, hurt too bad to cry. Was raised up there the first few years of my life. My dad is the late Billy Lee Rhodes and my mom is the late Marilyn Rhodes. My grandparents are the late LeeRoy and Geraldine King Rhodes. They were life long members of the community. And I had to move from there as a kid, but not by choice. Life's circumstances made it that I had to. Talked to my cousin Kim on the phone just awhile ago. She even told me that the Paul Thomas Funeral home was leveled. The Thomas family were there for us thru all of our losses (dad, and grandparents, and other family members as well. My heart and prayers will be with the community. And to the Thomas family, my prayers are with you as well. What you done for my family when I was a child, will never forget. Am a nurse now and raised 7 kids. Will see what we can gather up and bring up there to help out. Jamie Rhodes-Hardison |

Just talked to Bill Parkison and Ida Mae. He said Thomas Funeral Home is still there. Slight damage . From Thomas on South everything is gone including all the homes. Said Mineral Heights was hit real bad. They knew 2 of the deaths names. There is no power because of the broken gas lines. Phone service to Cardin has been restored.Janice if you go to Koam Tv website from Pittsburgh, Ks. You can watch their live news broadcasts. Also the stations in Joplin. Sorry dont have website just google for tv stations in what city you want. Out on strang town road where the Yankowskis lived the tornado wiped out a trailer and all buildings. Bill said there was nothing even left to go through. They dont know where all the debris went. Tom |

We drove up to Baxter today, and saw plenty of debris scattered north of Quapaw. Also, Empire was stringing new lines. Looked like the line had been down from town almost to the Boron plant. Quapaw barely squeeked by. Something north of the school was gone, and a few houses had some minor damage, but the town was lucky. |

Tom, Thanks for the info on the tv websites. I just watched the one from Joplin/Pittsburgh. It helps to be able to see it firsthand. I also just talked to Rayma and she also said that Paul THomas funeral home is still there. The damage and devastation is all to the South part of Town. Thank God for this website so we can all communicate. |

Mom, who took the buyout and is in Commerce, near Nokie, was told that the house, on Mineral Hgts is gone, totally gone. Cudos to the neighbors in Picher and how much they are doing for each other. |

Thanks Jan, for the compliment. I just thought we needed a place where we didn't have to "sign in" to visit. You know, like in the good old days!

Has anyone heard if Leroy Martin made it through the storm? I've asked a couple of people and they don't know. I know his house was in the bad area (a block or two from Peggy Rowe Starling's house). Also wonder about Amy Cruzan?? |

I talked with one of my friends who was able to go to Picher and help out a friend yesterday. She said they were draining the lagoon (at Mineral Heights) to search for more people. They evidently located several people in the lagoon yesterday or the day before. I understand (from what I read) that divers said the water in the lagoon wasn't deep (about 4 feet I think) but, the sludge in the bottom was about 4 to 6 feet deep. |

I just talked with Diane Martin (Max's wife) on the phone. She said Leroy is safe and with them. It did damage to his house and took his garage. Also completedly razed the house where Leroy's son and his wife lived. She said it also leveled three rental houses that she and Max own close by there. Anyway, she said Leroy is safe although really "wired" up. |

I have been following very closely, the news casts and this morning Eddie Kaheley was on CBS here in San Francisco. Something about rescue of a woman in a bathtub. She climbed into the tub for protection. Smart move. Still shots from the air on: http://www.tulsaworld.com/webextra/content/2008/slideshows/picher_tornado/index.aspx I hope LeRoy is ok. And that they find him soon. |

I also am glad to hear that Leroy is safe. The tornado narrowly missed the neighborhood where his grandmother Mimi and Uncle J.B. used to live and where Jackie Crice Howard and I grew up. It looks like the places where the Seats and the Turleys lived are gone. The Gleaves place and the Hurd's corner missed it. I try to figure out what I'm looking at in most of the pictures and can't identify the streets or intersections; the houses are just splintered. Did Bob and Stella McGowen's former house get hit? Paul Ingram's? I am so sorry. Never was a little town more loved, and it hurts to see it with even more devastation. I spent a lot of time today looking at Fredas' pictures of the landscape around Cardin. It all looks so familiar and peaceful. We were so fortunate to grow up there. And we are blessed to have a place in cyberspace to meet and remember. Thank you, Fredas. And may God bless Picher. |

Norma.. Stella and Goose's son and his wife lived in the house you asked about. It had already been bought out and razed. It was right across the street from Peggy Starling's house on Emily. Peggy emailed me and told me if you look in the pictures for the green L-shaped roof, it is Leroy Martin's house. It's a good marker to try to know what's where. She said Sandra and James Graves old house was right across the street and is completely gone. Maybe this can help you get your bearings a bit better. It did me (a little). Susie |

Thank you, Suzie. I'll be able to get some bearings. I'm glad none of the McGowens lost their home. I feel so bad for those who did. |
