Visit to Mom, Nokie and Picher.
I came home for a day last week. Tuesday 7-23 Briall and I flew in to KC. Spent the night with my son David and then we drove south thru Joplin, Baxter Springs and just north of Quapaw, we turned West and came onto 12th Street, turned North then West, North again just past the house where Mr. Mac's son lived and then sold to Larry Olds, We turned East and then parked on Gladys. In front of the house mom sold to the buyout a month earlier. Mine and Mill closures. BF Goodrich closing. The ice storm. The buyout. And now this. Briall had never been home berfore. David (40 next year) had a tear running down his cheek. Three minutes stopped and a Quapaw policeman came up in his cruiser. We talked for a minute or two. I knew enough people that he was able to identify that although I no longer held a title to any Picher property, that I was from there and on the way to visit mom in Commerce. Then he got another call and drove away. We took a couple of photos - this last for others. The distruction will forever be in my memory. Ed |
