Updated info on Bonne Terre mines
Hello again! The website i mentioned in my last post www.2dive.com didn't give a very good history about the Bonne Terre mine. I found a video that is very informative and i think anyone who views it should enjoy it! I have visited Bonne Terre mine a couple different times and it is a trully amazing experience! Just go to youtube.com and type in "Weird US plunges into the Bonne Terre mine" in the search box. It tells the history of the mine with alot of great video. There are also several other videos on youtube.com about the mine you can watch also. So, if you ever plan a trip to Southeast Missouri, stop by and take a tour, it's something you will never forget. And about 7 miles SE of Bonne Terre in two little towns called "Leadwood" and "Frankclay" Missouri (which is where the elementary school is where i work) you'd be amazed how similiar those towns are to the "Picher-Cardin" area. Lead contaminated and everything! Only difference is we haven't had any buyout offers yet. But they sure have done alot of cleaning up, no more chat-piles except for the partial one near where i live in Parkhills but it'll be gone soon. Take care everyone! Cheryl

Thank you, Cheryl, for letting us know that we aren't alone. I can only hope you people don't have to go through the agony of a buy-out. People who have spent their whole lives in Picher and Cardin have been driven from the only home they know. It's especially hard for those older ones who had their future taken care of, only to have it ripped from them. A lot of them simply went to "rest homes"! What a disasterous way to spend your "golden years". I simply cannot be convinced they are better off now. As you may know, many of our early mine owners and speculators came from your area. fredas |

You are very welcome! I certainly hope the people around here never have to go through what you all have gone through there either. We also have another abandoned mine here in Parkhills (formerly known as "Flat River") that has tours a few days a week, only difference is you cant actually go down in the mines in Parkhills like you can in Bonne Terre. My fondest memories when i was a kid were when i lived in Cardin. Alot of tears were shed when i was there this past April, it left a pit in my stomach to say the least. My son was especially impressed with Hayman field. He said he wished he could have watched the Gorillas play football there like i was fortunate enough to do when i was his age. The high school he attends here doesn't have a football team but he plays on the baseball team. We have alot of good folks here but nobody compares to the ones i knew when i was there. My sister and me were very lucky to have had such caring people to look out for us. We both attended Cardin Baptist church and that is where i was Baptized. I could go on and on about the different things we were "blessed with" by such caring people and if any of those people happen to read this and remember my Dad, sister, and me you know who you are! Thankyou so much and hopefully i will be able to see some of you when i return for a visit sometime in October. Sincerely, Cheryl
