The Lib Dems are right! At least they were right four years ago. The BBC are nearly right as well!
Here are the goverment figures from a reply to Chris Huhne by Ian Pearson(Minister of State) 18/1/7
Number of times barrier raised in each winter season since opening.
1982-83 1
1983-84 0
1984-85 0
1985-86 1
1986-87 1
1987-88 0
1988-89 1
1989-90 4
1990-91 1
1991-92 1
1992-93 4
1993-94 7
1994-95 4
1995-96 4
1996-97 1
1997-98 1
1998-99 2
1999-2000 6
2000-01 24
2001-02 4
2002-03 20
2003-04 1
2004-05 4
2005-06 3
2006-07 0 to date
What I find interesting from the reply is that the barrier was raised most often because of the volume of fresh water flowing out meeting a small tidal surge comming the other way. So the figures are more to do with rainfall than rising sea levels.
What the hell - this is politics - we cherry pick.
I trust the Lib Dems will amend their Web Site just as soon as I point out their error.
How Chris Huhne could have had this definitive answer from the Minister and then chosen the most extreme pair of concecutive 5-year periods only a politician could know - or maybe the program was recorded before he got his answer. |
