Message:   JB: I'd like to reply to your points.

1. It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.

-its an old song

2. I am old and set in my ways. The format is like the ancient red towelling bathrobe I wear when writing at night, a minor comfort.

- No. You're just afraid of something you don't understand. It's called prejudice.

3. I do not want to learn any more languages (I can still write programs in Pegasus machine code, which has not been used for half a century).

No programming languages required to learn at all. 99% of all bloggers have no clue about the underlying code - which is a good thing IMHO.

4. Things are not free if they carry adverts, especially ones that directly counter the content.

There is no advertising if you don't want them. I added Adsense because Steve needed to upgrade his server package and it was an inexpensive and unobtrusive way of doing so. Most blogs do not have any advertising.

5. I like the Forum (and its people) the way it is. I do not see the point of threads two hundred entries long, and I cannot be bothered to read them.

My offer includes a separate forum, but if you want, keep this forum.

6. You may call it a blog, but I call it a commentary. It predates blogging.

Semantics. It's a computerized diary.

7. You may find it ugly, but it is my seven-year-old, and I love it.

It's amazing how attached we get to things well past their usefulness isn't it? Its terrible to navigate, you can't search it and you can't link to it without a masters in html.

8. The site is now funded by a few of its faithful readers, who tell me that they do not want it turned into a blog.

It already is a blog. Besides which, what contributors to your fund want as far as the site is concerned is irrelevant.

9. The present total of 60,000 visits a month is at least two orders of magnitude greater than I ever anticipated.

It's tiny in comparison to its proper reach. Climate Audit gets somewhere between 500K and 1.1 million hits per month. There's no intrinsic reason why yours could not be as big, other than its seven-year old flaws.

10. The site is widely used as a resource by various academic institutions, why upset their links?

Then grandfather it - don't delete it. Just post a link to the new blog and keep the old site where it is.

11. Although I do not plan to have “I did it my way” sung at my funeral, I did.

So did Sid Vicious.

12. I do not do any web site modelling or mess about with the look of the site (not for seven years anyway). I just write (and calculate).

Which is exactly what the new blog would do. Except that it would be useful to the rest of humanity who don't navigate a nearly unnavigable website.

13. I particularly like the clouds. They hark back to one of my catch phrases when lecturing on instrumentation – the cloud of unknowing.

I think you're wandering off the subject. You can take the clouds with you.

14. I am unstinting in my admiration for Steve McIntyre, but I find many of the train spotters on his blog tedious.

You don't have to have comments. Besides which, if you did have comments, they'd be your trainspotters, not his.
