My understanding of the idea of 'clean electricity' is that basically it's any form of electricity generation that is favoured by the Green lobby. Wind and solar power would be at the top of the list, hydroelectric is favoured when a project is up and running (but generally not favoured when it's still in the planning stage) and natural gas is also favoured as the 'cleanest' type of fossil fuel.
The so-called dirty forms of electricity generation are coal, oil and nuclear. The terminology seemed to come in about twenty years ago when the nuclear industry, encouraged by various people like Margaret Thatcher, tried to present itself as being a very low pollution, very low CO2 generating industry. The Greenies responded to this by adopting the use of the term 'clean', taking advantage of the public perception of it being seen as a dirty industry.
I would suspect that in the USA most night-time electricity is generated by coal and nuclear, so in Greenie logic it wouldn't be 'clean'. |
