For what it's worth I certainly recall reading 'news' items related only to the approaching problems associated with dramatic and rapid cooling. Nothing at all to do with warming.
Maybe it was just a question of which option the press of the day thought most likely to sell newsprint.
On the other hand the writing of some SF related authors - J. G. Ballard would be my primary influence back then - seemed more related to warm environments than cold. Perhaps his experiences led him that way by making it easier to write about warmth than severe cold.
Presumably easier to film as well should one sell the story to Hollywood.
