Message:   Hi J,

We should probably take this off line I guess but in the meantime I do agree with your observations and the variation throughout the US (or at least those parts I have visited though mostly for rather short stops) is quite marked as you say.

The chilis are in very little soil really. Have a look here;

http://www.thepocketgarden.com/

I guess the total volume is indeed about the size of a pocket that would be sewn into a pair of jeans. With the top cut off the foil container is about 5 inches high and is maybe 2/3 full of compost. Say a mug full. Currently the largest plant is about 6 or 7 inches tall. Originally leafless number 2 now has a few leaves and has made it to about 1 inch! What a fighter ...

3 and 4 are about 4 to 5 inches tall. Looks like the other seeds didn't make it.

There is no advice on the pack or the web site about transplanting (though thinning if required is mentioned on the pack) and I suspect that the intention is to leave the plants in the pack for the duration of their productive cycle. However I can't help but think that may be rather counter productive and, of course, leaving any transplanting too long will likely make the entire process much more difficult or damaging as the roots from the different plants entwine.

I'm inclined to wait another week or so to give number 2 a better chance and take it from there. What do you think?

This growing stuff lark is like the inverse equivalent of following the Arctic Sea Ice melt figures .... ;-)
