George Muncaster
"1877. January 23, 1977 George Muncaster, South Belfast Soldier, Royal Artillery, 19, single The Gunner, serving with the 49th Field Regiment, was from Liverpool. He was shot by an IRA sniper while on foot patrol when he was fatally wounded in the chest by a single high-velocity bullet fired at 10.05pm at the junction of Eliza Street and New Bond Street. First aid was administered but he died within minutes of the shooting. An army spokesman said two children had been playing nearby and could easily have been hit in the incident. A detective constable told the inquest that the next day he investigated a break-in at a nearby school. He found a window in an upstairs classroom wedged open with books and a duster, leaving enough room for a rifle to be pushed through. “I have no doubt that this was the hidden gunman’s vantage point”, he told the coroner." From: “Lost Lives” 2004 Footnote – Contact was reported at 22.08hrs and George died in the arms of another friend of mine who to this day refuses to talk about NI. He lives near me and is living on a war pension. The firing point was identified in the FUIHP, no weapon was recovered or gunman identified that I’m aware of. A fuller account is given in “Corners” published by NIVA (www.nivets.org.uk) and available from the PRI. RIP mate. Graham |
