Remembrance Day - my grandfather
My grandfather lied about his age when he was 13 so that he could join the army and fight the "hun". This was 1914 and the recruiting officer was, I imagine, only too pleased to have more "cannon fodder", and was not about to turn him away or ask too many questions. He joined the Royal Artillery and saw action straight away in Northern France and Belgium. He was gassed and lost his sense of smell, much to my mother's dismay at the dining table many years later when he was oblivious to the inodourous tripe. I have a lovely embroidered card with the emblem of the Royal Artillery (a cannon) and a few words on the back: "To Elisa, Somme 1916, Jack." As you know that the Battle of the Somme was one of the bloodiest battles in history. We do not always understand wars. We do not always agree with wars. In an ideal world, there would be no wars. But there was a war and there still are wars. Millions died and millions more will die. Mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters. We remember them. Please read two poems this weekend: "In Flanders fields" http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/flanders.htm and "Please wear a poppy" http://hol.scdsb.on.ca/Please%20Wear%20a%20Poppy.htm |
