What a load of old cack
Mar 7, 06 - 6:21 AM |
Rumours abound ......
I've just read this, posted by Pancho Villa on a similar forum at www.petrochemlink.com. "Seeing projects and jobs go to India is one thing but FW Reading are now bringing designers in to do feed phase work at 6 pounds an hour, flights, accom' paid and a per diem allowance on 3 month working visas. I'm glad I'm coming to the end of my working life as all the fallback jobs like stacking shelves at B&Q have been lost to the 340,000 plus New Europeans who have been allowed to enter the UK in the last 2 years, unchecked and uncontrolled. I've put the purchase of my Bell Jet Ranger on hold for now." |

My response on that site was ....... "Are these piping designers or general cad monkeys? Has there been any retaliation to this practice from existing workers? What's the min wage in the UK atm? Looks to me like some people should be banding together to put a stop to this practice .... surely they can't get away with undercutting local rates with employees who need a special dispensation to work in the country? I'm not talking about a union, per say, but maybe a voice of objection from those local people being undercut and squeezed out! Arrghhhh, by blood pressure is going through the roof even hearing this!" Any other comments on this behaviour by these companies? |

FW's sidekick in Ireland (PM)are doing the same. I don't know that the deal is, so I can't comment on that. I do get the feeling though that this is the thin end of the wedge and if something isn't done soon the future looks bleak for piping kind. |

Fellas, I heard this rumour a few weeks ago to, from a friend of a friend who works in PM Cork in the Electrical dept. I doubt myself it could be all true, but it would be a way of keeping the rates down - And lets face it PM are stingy Mutha's at the best of times. But for Irelands own 'home grown' engineering company to do an "Irish Ferries" and exploit slave labour for a couple of Euro per hour would REALLY be a backwards step. Surely they would get the similar bad press as Irish Ferries. What self-respecting Pharma/Chemical Company would want to hire PM then? |

I worked with Jacobs in Cork on major job for Pfizers in Singapore and we had 13 Indians from Mumbia. I think 4 pipers and the rest Process Engineers, and that was 5 years ago. All the majors have been instructed by their head office to utilise India as they now all have offices there. The wests bubble is leaking. |

Most of the EPCM's in Calgary are sending work to India now. |

Guys this is going on right around the world..... I have been in Singapore for 5 years now with a small stint back in Cork and Dublin..... Jacobs and FW in Singapore are probably 80% Indian... and growing... The Aussie Company i work for here employ mainly indian labours, fitters and welders... their rates are so low that it can only get worse..... |

The good times are indeed here, Bechtel London paying 35 pounds for Designers, Engineers in London and Aberdeen getting 50 pounds, Process Engineers getting 70 pounds. All down to twenty years of not investing in Training by all Contracting Companies. They will no doubt use thses figures to justify more importation of labour from low cost centres and more exportation of Projects to India, Mexico,Poland etc. |

While I was with Jacobs for a few months back I learned that although they send work (stress packs, isos) to Mumbai the standard of work they receive back is pretty poor (cant give actual figures but in general anyway) but they justify it by saying that even tho the work takes 3 times longer to get done to an aceptable level it costs the same to get done i.e £3.00 here costs £1.00 there so it cancels itself out... to my eyes this is BS of the highest order add that to the fact that they have a rewards scheme for the amount of work that gets sent over there, in effect we are cutting our own throats.. how many youngish designers (sub 35 y/o)do you know of..? |
