Field welding on cement lined ductile iron/steel pipes
Many a times, field welding on ductile iron/steel pipings could not be avoided. Field welding generates intense localised heat on the piping. Can anyone give me some advise if welding (heat) has any detrimental effect on the (internal) cement lining?...kitsan please write to me at khew@cwrp.com.sg thanks |

My experience is in the Waste water treatment industry where we used cement lined ductile iron flanged spools. Welding cement lined pipe is a big no no and if there was a need to have some flexibility during installation due to various unknowns, An overlength spool flanged one end and plain the other was specified. The spool can be cut to suit and a special flange similar to a slip-on flange but where grub screws are used to fix the flange to the spool. This is not an ideal solution and should only be used as a last resort. Just ensure that the pipework is sufficiently supported against thrust forces and it will be ok. In waste water industry pressures are relatively low anyway. |

I guess it may depend on what kind of welding (and for what purpose) you are asking about. I agree, however, that in general reasonable alternatives to field welding should generally be explored. e.g. with regard to ductile iron pipe there are contemporary ways/devices available for providing even extremely strong field adaptable restraint (joining) that do not involve any field welding. However, cementlined steel and ductile iron pipes have been field-welded with success for decades, and AWWA standards, manufacturers, and/or organizations have suggested procedures for such operations (e.g. see http://www.acipco.com/aswp/techquestions.cfm referencing AWWA C206, http://www.acipco.com/adip/products/Sect9.pdf pages 9-30 on, and http://www.dipra.org/pdf/fieldCutBrochure.pdf). |

Good information provided there by Randy but as it stated there on the dipra brochure, butt welding is not recommended. So choose an alternative jointing method. I am situated in south australia hew. |
