30” pipe with oval section instead of circle.
We have a 30” pipe with oval section instead of circle. Is there any tolerance about it in API or other codes? Please specify it. |

I don't know if it is applicable to your work (or necessarily a problem) but I believe ovality of steel pipes is mentioned in API 5L and other standards. You could see a discussion of this at many places e.g. http://www.optical-metrology-centre.com/Downloads/Papers/Technip%20DOT%202003%20Paper.pdf for special offshore installation concerns etc. |

Out of roundness in a circular section is a major concern when the pipe is subject to external loading. (e.g vacumn pressure). This is due to phenomom of buckling. It is not such a problem on pipes subject to internal pressure only as increasing the internal pressure will reduce the out of roundness. Some good papers to learn more about effects of external pressure and designing against bucking would be codes such as BPV Code, Section VIII, Division 1, UG-28 through UG-30 and british standards PD5000. I think they both should give limits on out of roundness ( ovality) allowed and methods to calculate it. Regards |
