Autodesk Building Systems etc.

I have been working as a piping designer for a company which designs, constructs and operates process plants which produce PCC for the paper industry for 10+ years. We presently due all of our layouts in 2D based on a 2,000+/- 2d attributed block library which has been developed over the past 10+ years. Although this is advanced compared to other outside engineering firms we have worked with in the past, it is however a far cry from PDS or PDMS (both of which would not be considered by the company as software options). The trend to move to 3D design seems clear. So does anyone have an opinion on Autodesk Building Systems or similar products such as CADWorx, Flex Plant, Plant 4D, etc.

Thanks
Pyrex

Re: Autodesk Building Systems etc.

You might try looking into AutoPlant by Rebis.
It runs on the back of AutoCAD, and is not too difficult.

I think it's quite a good option for small to medium size projects.

You build a spec. driven model, and it will do all the usual bits and pieces ie., GA's, Automatic Isos (using Isogen), MTO's etc.

I'm sure there are others on the market, but I like this one!

Re: Autodesk Building Systems etc.

Having used PDS, AutoPlant and Cadworx I would have to say that a small to medium sized company would do well with Cadworx.
PDS requires a full time administrator and is expensive but the product is sophisticated and powerful.
Autoplant while cheaper than PDS is more costly than Cadworx.
Cadworx is cost effective and easy to learn. Your pipers will be up and running with it after a week.
As usual Isogen may take a little longer to set up properly but this is the case for all 3 software packages named.
