Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

d6aaa fan-
i did not overlook steve millward, don peters or mike maney. i tried to limit it to 1 or 2 wrestlers at each weight and based on my personal opinion, i don't think that Millward was as good as Ken Whitsel, and I don't think that Don Peters was as good as Doug Taylor was. I got to see Doug wrestle alot from his sophomore year until he graduated, and he was an absolute animal on the mat. As far as Mike Maney, his numbers just don't stack up to Scott Bair or Jake Strayer. Its nothing personal toward any of them, if anything i could have put them on the list just because they are BEA wrestlers, seeing as how i wrestled for BEA for 8 years, many of them included being on the same teams as Mike Maney. Who else do you think deserves to be on that list? I know that many will say Wade Schalles, but only winning one district, regional and state championship i couldn't put him in with Frank Eisenhower who won two of each. Trust me it was hard to eliminate guys down to 1 or 2 per weight, alot of good wrestlers were left off the list. I just can't put someone who won 1 state title in with someone who won 2 or 3.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

It is hard to look at just titles which I know is a great starting point however. Things to consider would be level of competition, AA vs. AAA, multi-placewinner, etc. I know this is your personal list and commend you on taking time to do it. I think it is almost better to list wrestlers not by weight class but by individuals because there are elite wrestlers left on the list who would be the top in any of the other weight classes. However, this is your list and list some great wrestlers, plus it got some discussion going on the forum which is always a good thing in the summer months.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

This is a tough topic and hard to pick, because of all the outstanding wrestlers & unreal careers.

I would say Trap McCormack should be 103 because thats where he won his titles.

Josh Kirsch 2003 state champion, 88 pins, I would give him the spot over Mike Cook.

112-119 could then be Shane Valko 3 time dist champ, 2 time reg champ, 3 time piaa state placer, Dist 6 career wins leader, & 87 career pins.

Nice work though!

ok,

i've reconsidered the list and what i am going to do is make a new list, based on light weight up to 132lbs, middle weight 135- 155, and upper weights 160 to Hwt. and limit it to 20 wrestlers in each class, then do a best of list of 15.

i should have it done by thursday evening, and hopefully if bfly has the time to post it on the site when its done. stay tuned.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

I think a lot of great points and granted I wouldn't even want to attempt to make these rankings but it was mentioned about Wade Shalles. Again, I think sometimes like the BCS statistics might need to go out the window. Schalles didn't start until his sophomore year yet he pinned 96 percent of his opponents, and winning a world university gold medal and a NCAA championship. I believe anyone whoever has competed at the NCAA level would trade a national title for a state title. I think he still holds the record in the Guiness Book of Record for pins and wins. Granted we are dealing with high school accomplishments and not all-time accomplishments. On the another note, someone like James Yonushonis was an NCAA All-American but didn't reach his potential until college or in a discussion earlier at 125 - Strayer, Bair, and Maney. Bair has more state titles yet was a .500 college wrestler would argue over a 2xNCAA All-American. Finally at heavyweight, on your all time team someone like Jim Nance, a great wrestler don't get me wrong but does he stack up against a guy like Carlton Haselrig who is the only person to hold 6 NCAA titles. Each person would have their own criteria I think when creating an All-Time Team is very difficult and challenging and again commend you are taking the time to research and create this topic.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

I had over 40 wrestlers listed for lightweights, tried to cut it to 20, couldn't even do that.(ended with 26) Rinella, Krouse, Reish, Lingle, Frick and Whetstone were on that list. One person i did forget to mention on the lightweight list was Eric Bowser of Richland. Skipped over his name when typing the list. I got to see the 5 wrestlers listed above numerous times, and without seeing the earlier wrestlers pre '85 its hard to compare these five with them. All five were great wrestlers and maybe should have made the list, but someone had to be cut. Hull was definitely worthy of being on that list, and was the last one cut for the upperweights. very tough to make this list, many more deserving wrestlers could have made the list. And there are atleast 3 current wrestlers ready to be added to the list once they graduate. (Altons and Bennett)

weikel- good district stats, but didn't do enough at states to make the list.

hunter guenot- very talented wrestler, maybe should of been ahead of brandon guenot with being a state runner-up twice, but lost some matches that he shouldn't have at the wrong time. losing to anthony andrews in the district finals is one of them. but also a 3 time regional champion and 2 time district champion. also didn't face the toughest of competition throughout his career, and should have won both times in the finals. but now that i think about it some more, he really should have been on the list and bumped brandon guenot off.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

you are right. i just can't put him ahead of anyone on that list, most have equal stats to his as far as his in terms of district and regional titles, and those who were not state champions or runner-ups were multiple time state place winners, where as he only placed one time. I watched him wrestle many times as he was a year ahead of me in school, so i got to watch him all through elementary, junior high and high school, and i think he was a very good wrestler, but i don't think he is one of the 20 best in that weight range. but he would probably be in the top 25 for sure.

Dayeo again great work and everything looks great.

A few things to possibly correct, Nate Morris was a state champ, crushed everyone at Hershey his senior year. Charlie "The Spaniard" was a two time state runner up.

Some others that you may consider would be:

Shad Benton: 3-time regional champ and state runner up & state third.

Eric Frick: State Champion, two time regional champ

Jody Strittmatter: State champion, state 3rd

Arthur Moss Jr.: 4-time district champ, 2 time regional champ, 2 time state medalist (6th & 4th) 144 career wins.

And lastly I agree Dave Marko! Adam Whetstone had a stellar HS career.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

You really think a wrestler who didn't win state title deserves more recognition then a wrestler who was a state champ? Really? You have at least 4 BEA wrestlers (3 Guenots) listed who never won a state title plus a few other non-state champs. Sure they were good/great wrestlers, but they weren't even the best in their weight class any year. Someone in this state was better then them every year they wrestled, but you list them on an all-time all-star list? Really?

Also, where are all the AA state champs from the non-Altoona side of the mountain? Strittmatter, Yahner, Murphy, Ferringer, Plocus, Neese, Beaujon, Boswer, Sichak, Strong, etc... You list Valko, but he never won a state title?

I could guess that bias and what-not had something to do with who was listed. But really the bottom line is some of these picks really make no sense.

Re: District 6 Best Wrestlers (1939 - present)

this just wasn't a list of wrestlers who had to win a state title to get on it, many were multiple time place winners and had well over 100 wins. with so many wrestlers in this district winning state titles, and placing multiple times, people are bound to be upset that someone didn't make the list. also you have to factor in competition faced. don't get me wrong AAA fan, the wrestlers you mentioned were very good, but not all of them faced the competition that this side of altoona faces throughout the season, look at the number of district, regional and state champions from this side and compare them to your side, i would venture to guess its at least 70% to 30% margin meaning that these wrestlers are given more opportunities to be showcased on the state level. there were some really good wrestlers that came out of the laurel highlands area and i'm sure there will be more, but this was my opinion and who i got to see wrestle the most.

you mentioned jody strittmatter (i believe he was the one not john), i did get to see him wrestle a couple of times at the district tournament and he did impress, but never really started to dominate until he reached college, and since this list was high school accomplishments only, i couldn't factor that in. also i did have eric bowser from richland in the list. and art moss was one of the last ones cut from the middleweight list, if he had placed more at states, he would have made the list. murphy and plocus were also close, but look at the wrestlers who also were on the list at the same weight class, i don't think they were the caliber of those who were listed. as for the others i think you may be reaching a little bit with wanting them to be included on the list. just my opinion.
there were a ton of guys to sort through and no matter who was chosen and those that weren't, i think district 6 wrestlers of the past have compiled quite a list of accomplishments that may just surprise a lot of people.

i do agree that you missed some people cam was deffinitly a dominate wrestler in high school. i feel that you left out thad benton even though he didn't win a state title (i believe 2 or 3 time district champ, atleast 2 time regional champ, 3 time state place winner i believe). also matt b from westmont could be listed (placed multi times at states) if you listed bowser from richland. and i agree sichak could be on the list as well as seeing he as better stats then some on the list (2 x district champ, 2 x 3rd, regional champ and placed one other time, 5th at states and state champ 127-19). the list seems to be a little more aaa dominated to me.

It is very hard to judge competition which makes it hard to make an all-time team overall. For example, one previous example about the Guenots from BEA. Corey Guenot (3 x stateplacewinner and state runner-up to another D6 wrestler Eric Frick). I believe if he was 130 AA or another weight he could have been a state champion. This isn't a knock on AA.I don't necessary agree with state champion having to be a gauge either. If you have watched a lot of wrestling you can tell who sticks out above the rest of the other wrestlers throughout history.

1. '97 BEA (17-0) 6 shutouts, outscored opponents 54.2 to 6.5, state individual 3rd, all 13 starters 20+ wins, qualified 10 to states (was a state record at the time)
2. '99 BEA (18-2) state dual champs, state individual champs, national champs, beast of the east champs
3. '87 BEA (18-0) defeated Canon Mac (#1 state ranked and highly ranked in the country) and Shikellamy (also a state power) first time a district 6 school ranked nationally
4. '01 State College (13-2 after state duals) state second duals and state second individual
5. '08 Central Mountian (24-1) state duals 3rd, state 2nd individual
6. '61 Lock Haven 4 state champions in this line-up, would have cruised to an individual state title had a team score been kept
7. '74 BEN would have been state runner-ups if team score would have been kept (1/2 pt behind using current scoring system)
8. '99 Claysburg Kimmel (13-2 after state duals) state semifinalists, state individual 5th
9. '03 Forest Hills (15-1 after state duals) state semifinalists

you say its about who people wrestle well thad benton lost to robinson who won a couple state titles as a junior in the finals and warner who also won a couple titles in the semi's as a senior. benton also had to wrestle up weights during his carreer because of the ickes that were on his team. if he didn't have to do that i think he would have places several more times. sichak lost to the same kid twice his junior year a returning state runner up, placing 5th. and his senior year beat Hluschak first round, state champ next year and division 1 all american, pinned edwards in the semi's, was a state runner up as a junior and a 4 time placer, and rendos in the finals, who went on to win 2 state titles. also in that weight that year was engler who won a state title the next year and gavin who was a 2 time ncaa finalist and champ. he did that all after having knee surgery 2 weeks before districts also. just amazing that kids like that because they wrestle aa aren't even considered.
