On board during N. Vietnam raids May-September 1972
I was a radioman 3rd class in the radio shack in the spring of 1972 when we were hit on the bow by enemy fire off the coast of N. Vietnam, and when we nearly were blown out of the water by Russian-made missles...scary times. Also our forward gun mount blew up causing fatalities and injuries to several guys during those months. A very eventful year for the Stoddert...all following a fire on board while we were in port before we left for Vietnam. |

Thanks for the post, Jim. There are lots of guys sharing these memories. Did you know Robert Mills, one of the four? I have been in contact with his son and he is looking for some information on his Dad. Carole |

I may have known Mills. Since I was a radioman, I didn't know a lot of guys from other areas on the ship. Names of guys have faded some over the years, but I did have frequent contact with Lt. Commander Martin, the weapons officer. He was in and out of the radio shack from time to time. I was there on the side of the ship when they retrieved him from the sea. He had been blown overboard by the blast. He had apparently been standing near the door of the gun mount when it blew. We did not know how many guys had gone overboard for a while. His clothes were tied in knots on the lifeline. It was a very sad and gruesome day for us all. |
