Gun Mount
I also will never forget that terrible day the Forward Gun Mount Blew, At that time i was berthed in the forward berthing, starboard side middle rack, right accross from the forward carrier room, i was just leaving my post office, to go to my locker and get a pack of smokes, the post office which was starboard side aft, i got about midships and asked myself did i lock my door, so i turned around and double checked the p/o door, and started up the starboard side again and about midships, there was this hugh explosion at first i thought that we had been hit by enemy fire, GQ sounded immediately and i was half way there already, so up to the bridge for my GQ station, once i got there, there was little doubt of what had happened,,, one of the very minor things that happened to me was, that the carrier room door took out my rack, i considered my self a very luckey sailor for going back and checking the p/o door. |

I feel even luckier,as I was in the damage control party, and more often than not, sat on that bottom rack while in my d.c. gear, since we were moving "Powders" from mt51 to mt52.I was dressed out and on station ,however at that moment, I happened to be talking to my buddy from 1st division,sn Kenneth myers, when that door blew into those racks |

Chuck and members of the Benny Sweat when the gun mount blew up: Walter (Ski) Zylowski FTG2 and myself are trying to gather as much info as possible on what lead up to to mount exploding as well as the incident itself. We are trying to put a documentary and memorial together on it. If you have any information you'd like to share please contact me - Jay Jansson FTG2 at jjansson@prodigy.net. Thanks and may our lost shipmates rest in peace. God Bless you all. Jay Jansson |
