Ellen, I came aboard the USS Benjamin Stoddert in the summer of 1969 and was assigned to First Division. This group was in charge of taking care of the structure of the ship, painting, repairs and standing watches, manning the Helm (steering). Your father was one of the supervisors of first division personnel. At the time I remember him looking like a crusty old salt. Always saw him with a cup of coffee in his hand. I always saw him in a positive and friendly way, instructing and teaching us newbe's the ropes. He had an infectious smile and I'll always remember him with that cup of coffee in his hand, sitting on one of the cleets, keeping an eye on his "boys". I don't know anyone who had a bad word to say about your father. Sorry to here that he passed so young. I had sent an earlier response but I guess it didn't get through to you. Hope you get this one.
