Building a model of DDG-22 (Never a sailor)

Greetings,
My name is Tony Bunch, and I am a ship modeler. 3 Years ago, I decided to build a small scale model of an Adams Class DDG. After sifting through some 8 x 10 glossies given to me from a friend and customer from my Auto Service Shop, I decided to build DDG-22. I frequently post model, "builds", and exchange information with fellow ship modelers on modelwarships.com. Here is where I met DDG-22 veteran Bill Halvorson. He sent to me pics from WestPac 72. I used these photos to more accurately build a 1/700, (1" = 58'), model of DDG-22. The kit was set up to do pretty much any Adams DDG, so some corrections/modifications/changes were needed. Thanks to Bill's sending some pictures and slides form WestPac 72, I accomplished a fair representation of DDG-22 from 1972. My simplified diorama is entitled, "..gun run, Tonkin gulf 1972".
Please check out these pics:

I became greater interested in these sharp looking warships, so much so that I decided to build a larger DDG-22; this time in 1/96 scale, (1" = 8'), but this project is much more time consuming and slower moving. Thanks to Bill, I am now a dedicated fan of USS Benjamin Stoddert, and I have since interacted with no less than 4 DDG-22 vets. This interaction is motivation to say the least. This very large, (56.5" hull length), model starts out as a fiberglass hull and some 1/96 BuShip plans. All else is either scratchbuilt or available in resin cast copies of small, more common-to-many-ships accessories, (like gun mounts, w/t doors, missile launchers etc), which speeds the build somewhat. No where near completion, but it's still here with me.
Cut to today,
I have decided to build DDG-22 in my favorite scale which is 1/350. I started out with a White Ensign Models resin, "multi-media", kit of DDG-22.
This is a limited run model and costs 165 GBP new. That's $300 or so!
I got one from a guy in Australia second hand for about half of that. I started on this project at earnest about 4 months ago, and if anyone is interested please go to:
www.modelwarships.com > message board > calling all ship fans > calling all Adams Class DDG fans forum thread.
This is an, "online build", and is intended for information sharing and modeler's chat.
I am neither promoting myself, nor offering anything to the DDG-22 organization for self gain.
If anyone is interested in seeing the progress of this 1/350 DDG-22 model, "build", this is an invitation. I intend to have this model finished in time for a trip to the VA. Beach International Plastic Modeler's Society annual National Convention. This event is the biggest show of its type this year.
Veterans like Bill Halvorson have made me feel like there are others' who/m might be interested.
Thank you, Tony Bunch

Re: Building a model of DDG-22 (Never a sailor)

Tony - hats off to you for building models of the Benny Sweat. Since retirement last year, I am building kit models of many ships. Most of them are motorized. Yours sound much more complicated and true to each ship. Thanks to you and Bill Halvorson for keeping the memory of the DDG-22 alive.

Jay Jansson's reply........

Hi Guys,
Jay,
Thanks for the thanks!
This means more to me than you'll ever know.
When aboard DDG-22, was the ship in DesRon 12?
The modelwarships.com gallery is just waiting for more model ship contributors. Please chekc out this website if you have not already.
If you live in San Diego, let me know; we can meet.
Faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch

Re: Building a model of DDG-22 (Never a sailor)

Tony - we were with DESRON 33. My former Division Officer sent me the info with a scan of the DESRON 33 logo. Will forward that on to you in a separate email. It's pretty cool with a Hawaiian theme.

Best regards,
Jay
