Just a little Simple info, that hopefully explains an understanding that has deapth and wieght, rather than misunderstood, none explanations, that most newcomers are confused about, on arrival in AA.
Nothing I send is far from the Delete key, so if it aint appriciated then we have choices today..:-)))
HP = Higher Power...or...HP = His/Her Program....or...HP = Help People..
None of which we have when still drinking,or when we first get to AA(As far as Alcohol is concerned).
We end our drinking in the grips of the disease,which has become the power in our lives,becourse the disease has gotten us to turn our backs on God(As far as alcohol is concerned)and it is dictating and dominating everything I do,Drink!!!.God is the Power, and I aint got Him (As far as alcohol is concerned)in my life, Powerless over alcohol is Godless over alcohol.
Hit Bottom is'nt mentioned in the AA program, but it is important becouse it is the process where we turn back to the God we have turned away from, to ask for help.(Even if we don't actually know what we are doing.)12x12,First Step, insists that we do this FIRST !!! Tho he did'nt mention it in the BigBook,more was revealed to Bill also.(12x12 came years later)
H.I.T.B.O.T.T.O.M.= Hurting Inside Totally Burnt Out Turn To Our Master....
It is an Inside job,not an outside circumstance,or condition, we find ourselves in,as a result of our alcoholism.(Usually a desperate plea for help.)We have abandond God, but He has'nt abandonded us,so when we ask for help,He guides us to AA.(Often referd to as the Step before the Steps)
Here we find this power greater than ourselves.You plus us is a power greater than you,on your own.As it is for us.Me plus you is a power greater than myself.I could'nt stay sober,you could'nt stay sober,but together WE can stay sober.Proof I think of US being a power greater than self.
It is written that "When Any two or more are gathered together in my name,there I will be in the midthst" we alky's know this more than any other society in the world.When any two or more come together for the purpose of recovery,God comes in our midthst and produces a power greater than ourselves, that we can absolutly depend upon, to not have to drink.So its produced by us,but its greater than us,and the Big Book says with this attitude you cannot fail.No Human power has now become a much Higher Power.
The insanity we speak of in recovery is "Repeating the same behaviour and expecting a different result"...Drinking.!!! So here is a power greater than myself that will enable me to not have to Drink,which is restoring me to sanity.(Please don't quote the Legal,or complicated deffinitions, about Insanity,OK ???)Hence we are now part of a power that will enable me to not have to drink.
It is interesting to me to note that there is no mention of God,Jesus,Budda,Alla,Mohamid,...or any other noun we use to discribe God,or HP.Infact Higher Power aint even mentioned in the first two Steps (Do YOU see it mentioned?) A Power Greater Than Self, is what is mentioned,and AA is certainly that.
Atheists,and Agnostics, need have no problem with this explanation.We don't care if they don't believe in God,or can even prove there aint a God,they can decide where this power comes from for themselves,but they can't deny this power,cos as they reach out they touch it,and as they touch it they become a part of it,Sooooooooooooo ???
In the third step I have learnt that My Will is my thinking,and My Life is my actions,so I can now turn this over to whatever power works for me,(AA itself maybe)and by doing this I will be cared for and protected weither I like it ,or not.
To recap...
First Step.
I have no God in my life (Where alcohol is concerned) so I am Powerless,and unmanageable.
Second Step.
I Hit Bottom, turn back to the God I'd turned away from, and ask for help.He directs me to AA.Now I have God back in my life,(As far as alcohol is concerned)and a Power I can depend upon to not drink.
If Drinking is Insanity..then..Not Drinking is restored to Sanity.....I have come,why?To believe THIS!!!
Third Step.
I have put my Will and Life(Knowing what that is-Most don't!!!) into the care of the Power I have an understanding about.
I like what I was taught about this...All Steps 1,2,&3 really mean is...I can't,He can,So let HIM...:-)
Question :--
Why do I need a Power, in my life, as far as Alcohol is concerned ???
Answer :--
Cos I aint got one..........Thats Why !!! ........Powerless...
Function, to defeat the Power of the disease,that has become the power in my life,that I can't get out from under,on my own...............Dah !!!
I don't know why Alkies in alcoholics anonymous claim to be powerless over alcohol ???
As long as I stay here with You,doing this wonderful way of life,I have so much power over alcohol |
