Hoyle was actually monumentally wrong a lot of the time.
I can't see anything about present day physics that would attract young people into the subject. Who wants to be another Stephen Hawking?
You're quite right. The image, coupled with the overwhelming male dominance of physics must make it monumentally difficult for physicists to get laid. Why would anyone want to go into it?
