And the way to restore public confidence is?
"We are a campaign established by journalists and statisticians to improve the understanding and use of statistics by government, politicians, companies, advertisers and the mass media. By exposing bad practice and rewarding good, we aim to restore public confidence in statistics."
And what do they think Number Watch has been doing all this time ?
And what a great start to their new service... Hilary Benn's sell by date scare. An attempt to use statistics where none is needed beyond telling us there is a problem. The real problem is to understand how food safety concerns are best met by using time and date information and making sure it works.
I fear that Number Watch is not po-faced enough.
Abuse of government statistics is no laughing matter and should not be mocked. We serious-minded and responsible journalists and statisticians understand the proper way to approach these matters which is not through such amateur and un-regulated outlets as "blogs" which might give the public imformation which has not been properly assessed and explained.
Not only that we think there might be money in it.
(Also, possibly, expenses.)
