I don't think that Texas University link actually explains the connection between the Gulf of Mexico 'dead zone' and biofuels all that well.

I thought of another unintended consequence of encouraging biofuel production the other day when I heard about the current heatwave in the USA. What kills people in a heatwave is a high humidity level, and anybody living near corn crops will experience humidity levels being raised even more due to transpiration from the crops. This issue is mentioned towards the end of this news article:
