I have a Triumph Spitfire fitted with a Fiat 2 litre twin cam (from a 131). Not surprisingly it goes rather well, or at least it did unti I decided to change the noisy gearbox.
Everything was going great until I tried to refit the bell housing. Whatever I do, as soon as I nip up the bolts holding the housing to the gearbox itself, the whole issue binds up solid.
Whats going on? I've tried everything but still it won't have it! I have two gearboxes and now the bellhousing has the same effect on them both.
I find this strange, are the bellhousings different? If you put the original bellhousing on the original
Gearbox does it work? Are you using the right length of bolts?
I only have one bellhousing and the same thing is happening on both the original and the new gearbox. I'm using the original bolts which seem to be appropriate. Somehow I'm missing a trick, but what?
At last success! I still do not know what and why, but it does seem the whole problem was something in the box was mis-alligned. With the thing fully assembled, rapid selection of the gears lined it all up and the box suddenly became freed off.
How I got the same situation with both boxes is beyond me but I won't argue. However, I now pass to another problem! Does anyone know where I can get a replacement bell houseing oil seal. This little beast is clearly marked 28x48.8x8. Nobody even acknowledges the existance of oil seals sized in decimal points of a millimeter.
Direct Fiat supply draws a blank, they don't seem to have made that size in decades. HELP, 'cos I'm rapidly going off this car!
Thanks David! As far as I am concerned Middle Barton Garage are the best since sliced bread. They appear to have the required and it is en route as I type this.
