127 Sport (buying/sorting/looking/and is it factory spec.

Fiat had a series of three types for the 127`s.
series 1: 903cc, some had a saloon body 4 speed
series 2: 903cc and 1050cc hatch 4 speed
series 3: 903cc, 1050cc and 1300cc 4 speed and 5 speed

SPORT: This was a series 2 (two) vehicle 1978>1982 4 speed
There are, to my knowledge, no chassis identification differences or engine number diferences to identify a SPORT from other models. The unique lower final drive gearbox fitted to the SPORT has no external marks.
ALL YOU HAVE IS THE LOG BOOK DETAILS TO IDENTIFY ENGINE NUMBER (located on the block at the cam end of the cylinder head) AND CHASSIS NUMBER (stamped on the offside inner wing in 1/2 inch high letters/numbers)
1050cc engine no. will be 127 A 000 (if 127 A 3 000 then thats a 1300)
So your first check will be the numbers...if they`re not there, or they look like they`ve been doctored .............

COLOUR, the SPORT is finished in black. orange and quite rarely in a light metalic blue colour.......Obviously a bodyshell can be re-sprayed, so try to scratch some paint off up under the dash or bonnet or inside the boot area somewhere. If it aint met blue, orange or black....suspect the orignality of the shell.

BODYSHELL;series 1 and 2 bonnets will open almost 90 degrees (series one bonnets are different because of the higher headlamp configeration and are a different shape) series 3 bonnets will not open fully to 90 degrees. the slam panel(front panel) has a different bonnet catch retainer to series 1 and 2.
Series 3 shells were built with a modified nearside inner wing to fascilitate the 5 speed gearbox. Looking at the nearside inner wing from directly opposite at the offside; the chassis box section which retains the gearbox mounting will run parallel from the bulkhead to the inner wing top and then drop at about 45 degrees to mount at the front crossmember. On series 1 and 2 cars the chassis box section will run from the bulk head diaganally down to the front crossmember....The latter requiring modification to fit the five speed gearbox.
Series one shells will not have the reinforced offside engine mount as fitted to series 2 and 3.

If you are in any doubt as to the possible non originality of a vehicle, then do take someone along to help.

Classics now, are being re-shelled all the time and whilst this takes away the originality of the vehicle, it means that at least a "vehicle type" can be preserved and enjoyed. The ravages of time and rust sometimes mean a full refurbishment is totally uneconomical to finished valuation. However, the original and fully documented matching number vehicle will always command a premium over and above the copy.

Light Metallic Blue?? fraid not.Orange,Black and SILVER only, the silver's had blue piping on the seats instead of orange,
GTs were Red, Black or the light Metallic Blue.
We've had 5 out of the 6 colours in my household, suppose we'll have to get an Orange 1050 to complete the set

Best one a Black Sport witha GT engine but with the 4 speed, used to eat Nova SRs back in the day

btw Series 2 903s were available as a saloon, on the Irish market anyway

Well, in over 20 years of being around Fiat 127s, I've only ever seen 2 silver Sports, one I bought had been resprayed black,it had a1300GT engine as well , the other I went to buy over 15 years ago but the front pillars were so rough, I suspect the windscreen was holding the roof up .
My brother has one but its based on a reshelled CL.
Came across a light metallic blue1050 MK2 Super in a field years ago, owner thought the OHC was from a 128

Re: 127 Sport (buying/sorting/looking/and is it factory spec.

Back in 1979, my mother had a brand new Silver 127 Sport EAT 250T (with blue seat piping ). I was only 4 years away from getting my provisional licence and she used to keep her cars for 5 years as she only did 3000 miles a year so I had my eye on this for when I passed my test. Imagine my joy when it was part exchanged for a Strada 75 CL.............grrrrr.

Fortunately, my dad had a 132 2000 which I kind of inherited until it was chopped in for a Mk 3 Escort. I don't speak to my parents any more

Re: 127 Sport (buying/sorting/looking/and is it factory spec.

I've an 1982 Autocar magazine with a review of used 127s and one is a 2 tone Sport, black over silver....

Re: 127 Sport (buying/sorting/looking/and is it factory spec.

I guess we`ve established that metalic coloured 127 Sports are very, very rare.
My whole point really was to establish the fact that the 127 Sport can now be considered a sort after Fiat classic and current levels of valuation reflect that situation. Not to put too finer point on the matter, it has to be said that there are "ringers" out there and the ringers, however good cannot be seen to have the same values as the genuine, all original, all numbers confirming, factory supplied item. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 127 Sport (buying/sorting/looking/and is it factory spec.

you are totally right, a ringer is breaking the law, When the car has the plates cut out and new ones welded in.You are breaking the law. And if the police puts that ring car,Your car will be removed from the road for good. The only way to reshell a sport, is to buy a shell from factory seat or fiat which wouldn/t have any numbers at all, This would still be a sport. The y reg sport which i restored with ben.Is a 5 speed super. But i have always looked at that sports as a mk2 facelift,A sport with 5 speed gearbox.Ben sold that car as a 5 speed super, with the plates as the super. The sport shell was scraped.I run a reshell sport, But its a fiat 1050cl.But boy it still puts, Handles the same as any sport.Just good fun.
