Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Hi First time poster...have found your site very useful as not much available in Australia regards spare parts...trying to find out if there are any suppliers of uni-joints (all five) for the coupe...have recently purchased a 1974 automatic coupe ...had one in the early eighties and had the opportunity to buy this one...it has a loud bang when I select reverse which sounds like it is coming from the differential/rear of the car...any ideas or anyone else had this problem...it is in the shop at the moment getting the auto transmission re-conditioned...hopefully that is the end of the problem but just in case trying to find out if anyone knows where to get uni-joints...

Have spent about 120 hours just getting the windows to go up and down without stopping or screaming...I was amazed at all the grease applied to the cables and sheaves which I suppose whoever was trying to fix the windows before me thought would fix the issues...gotta love cable and pulleys...a real work of art...my heart sank when I first stripped out the window regulators and the winders and pulleys and it all sprang apart in my hands...how the hell was I going to put all this back together???

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

hi glen, welcome to fiatmotorclub forum, not too sure as why the bang happens, may be to high revs as the stick is moved into reverse?have heard that the reverse is the first gear to give out if the box is failing, what did the autobox specialist say about it?

universal joints, try a engineering shop that does propshalfs, have seen some on Ebay which were suppose to fit,

ahh the cables!the saloon had a rack system. grease? oh dear! i need to fix my coupe drivers side window, thought the motor on mine was faulty, have been told by a fellow 130 owner it takes a day to set it up ,120 hours? wow! did you have the pages out of a workshop manual to guide you? or trail and error? well done on setting it up, when we get better days here in manchester, England (-6 tonight brrr!) the stig, (brian)

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

THanks Stig...I work in PNG and the internet isn't that great up here...the car is still with the transmission people getting some new bearings???...I can hear the cash register ringing from here...the one thing I have managed to get done successfully was get the weber reconditioned and when that was done the idle was brought below a 1000 rpm (around 800-900)so that is not what has been causing the noise...Yeah the windows took a very long time due to trial and error...while I was at it I repaired the holes where the screws go in to hold the door cards, speakers and door handles on...after 38 years I guess it was easier to just put ever larger screws in...one of the holes took a 7mm screw ...I used nutserts so that now I have 5mm screws with allen key domed heads, looks great and I don't have to guess which screw goes where...-6 that's brass monkey weather...ah yes I have visited UK on a number of occasions (married a bonnie Scottish lass...sometimes there not so bonnie but that's another matter)...31 degrees (Celsius) today and raining cats and dogs...will post again when I get back to Brisbane and pick the car up and let you know if the reconditioned box fixed the problem or I just spent a lot of money...

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

the auto box is a borg-warner model 12, as used in jaguar xj`s, and E type, so some parts should be easy to get hold of, if the auto shop has come the "intake of breath" routine, take a jar of salt with you, (pinch of salt!) look forward to your feedback

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Ok have "Tony" back...unfortunately it didn't fix the clunking/banging noise...well maybe softened it a bit...will leave it for the time being but I guess eventually I will have to drop the differential and tail shaft at the spline and get it looked at...I guess the best thing is that the transmission shop showed me some of the old parts and they were pretty well shot...so I guess the transmission needed doing in any case...if any one has any ideas or previous experience let me know...

PS cost was 1500 AUD

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

good news you have "tony" back, have a look at the radius arm bushes, the one near the hub has been known to fail, will need to lever up and down, another place to look, hope it`s not a diff problem,

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Hi, I had this same problem with my Coupe, and in maybe 15 years of ownership never solved it! From memory, the violent thump was when selecting reverse, even at 600 rpm. I did find that selecting drive, and then reverse was much better, and you could feel the slack being taken up most times. I had everything either replaced or reconditioned, gearbox, propshaft, UJs etc. I did have the differential 'reconditioned', but when they told me they had shortened some parts, I did not expect it to solve the problem, and of course it didn't. I am pretty sure this was a bodge. But then I gave up.

Shortly afterwards of course, a brand new differential popped up on ebay - I think it was in Australia, but very expensive.

Please let me know when you finally solve it!

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Thanks Richard, what you say is interesting...yes every time I put it in reverse it bangs like hell...very hard to put up with, and yes it doesn't matter what the RPM is. It has a fair bit of movement where the propeller shaft joins the differential via the collar which fits over both. Given what you say you have to wonder whether it's able to fixed at all??? Still it keeps me out of the pub and have had a lot of success in other areas.

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Yep Papua New Guinea even...aka the land of the unexpected...

Has anybody ever greased the shaft at the splines...where the shaft comes out of the differential and joins the propeller shaft using a female connection/cover. Mine has a lot of movement. I have tried twice to separate the join but chickened out on both occasions because it involves removing the cover from the differential spline and doesn't move very easily

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Short update...No joy so far with regards stopping the banging/thumping when selecting reverse..."Tony" is in the Diff' shop getting that sorted or at least checked so that I know where I am at with that...I got Uni joints from Italy...the transmission now makes a slight grinding noise when selecting Drive to Park and Drive to 1st and 2nd it only does this when cold...when it warms up a bit this stops...the shop where I had it reconditioned is pulling it's hair out trying to find a solution...meantime I am busy hiding the petrol and the matches in case they get any ideas...and so it goes on...in the meantime I have stripped the air conditioner and heater shrouds out and completely reconditioned the lot...sandblasted the flappers and glued new seals in place...Fiat must be Latin for patience

Re: Fiat 130 Coupe u joints

Toni is back home after 7 weeks away...some good news is that the auto transmission is behaving almost as it should...for anyone interested the problem was a lack of vacuum...the solution was a tune up...part of which involved getting the distributor reconditioned as the bushings were cactus fundangus and so it wouldn't hold 10 degrees in the timing (kind of all over the place)...the grinding noise has disappeared and the banging when selecting reverse is almost normal...also when changing down when bringing the vehicle to a stop there is no shudder. Who would have thought! I guess anyone with any knowledge of these Borg Warners would have known...the problem is that the owner of the business that was doing the reconditioning wasn't even born when the transmission was produced. The good news is that through out the whole time he has been trying to find out what was causing these problems he hasn't charged me for it...This started January 14th this year and so far the car has been away for a total of 11 weeks...it will be nice to just go for a drive...
