BIBLE AND THEOLOGY FORUM

Welcome!  You are at BibleAndTheology.com, which is the general forum for BibleAndTheology.org.  Persons are invited to post on Bible and Theology (widely interpreted).  Some postings may be chosen to be reposted on BibleAndTheology.org.  Give & receive love here. If you post here, please do not use "Anonymous" or the like. Choose your own screen names, but do not use one that you know is already being used by someone else. Please:

1. You may debate with any ideas posted, but do not post objections to the topic, style, spelling, use of capital letters, or grammar of anyone's posting.  For example, you may debate whether the moon is made of green cheese, but kindly refrain from reviling a poster by telling him that it is politically incorrect to discuss green cheese.

2. Do not post complaints or attacks vs. other posters.

3. No obscene language,cuss words, or blasphemy may be used.

4. Send complaints privately by e-mail to NellPatKay@hotmail.com.  If your posting is deleted, it could be because it violates forum rules or is just chosen for a short run on the forum.

Note that if you paste onto the Forum, for some reason Bravenet may change your quote marks and apostrophes into something else, like little boxes or funny U's.   Thanks for coming, participating, and for showing love .

SHA'AL OR DARASH? DID SAUL INQUIRE OR NOT?

SHA'AL OR DARASH? DID SAUL INQUIRE OR NOT?

1 Sam 28:6:
6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

1 Chron 10:13-14:
13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;
14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

On first reading it appears that 1 Chron contradicts 1 Samuel by saying that Saul did not inquire, while 1 Samuel says he did, but got no answer. However, the Hebrew solves this problem. In 1 Samuel the verb is shin-aleph-lamedh, the same root as in Saul's own name (Sha'ul in Hebrew). As the Hebrew has it, Sha'ul sha'uled, as it were. He did ask the LORD, but got no answer. In 1 Chron 10:14 Sha'ul is taken to task in that Sha'ul did not darash! The verb is darash (daleth-resh-shin) and implies more than just asking a question. This verb suggests seeking with care, searching. Deut 4:29 uses the same verb for seeking the Lord:

27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.
28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek [ DARASH ] him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

So we note: Sha'ul sha'uled, but did not darash. So I ask, am I a sha'uler or a darasher?
