I’ve noticed that many learners avoid student counseling even when they’re clearly struggling, and I’m curious about everyone else’s experiences. Why do students hesitate to ask for help?
From what I’ve seen, a big reason is stigma—some students think seeking counseling means they’re “weak” or “broken,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. Others worry their friends or teachers might judge them. Confidentiality is another concern; students often fear their personal issues will be shared without their consent.
There’s also a lack of awareness. Many don’t actually understand what student counseling offers or assume it’s only for severe problems. Some feel nervous about opening up to an adult they don’t know well.
I think schools need to normalize mental health support and communicate clearly about how counseling works. What barriers have you observed, and how can schools help students feel more comfortable seeking support?
