I'm hoping that this info may assist you
I can see in my mind the close they lived in but not the number and they were on the left side of Shettelston Rd just passed their close their seems to be an Iron shutter which was pulled across either the front of a shop or cinema and stayed upstairs 1 up someplace between Ferman St & Vesalius.The CO-Op was just up the road on the other side.
Son David joined the Navy and I'm sure he was on the HMS Vangaurd that would be about 1947approx

Where you describe is probably between Darlieth Street and Kenmore Street. The iron gate you mention could have been at the Premier Picture House, known locally as the Buggy. It is now a Social Club called The Barn.
